Grant’s Tomb: My top five

I’m guessing if you read last week’s column then you’re probably kind of surprised to see my ugly mug sitting here again this week. Well, don’t fret too much dear reader: by the time you read this I will be long gone.

However, that doesn’t mean I didn’t leave you a going away present. Think of this as an encore, one last chance for us to bond. But I digress.

Once I decided it was time for me to go I planned on writing this column. However, I kind of ran out of time, thus you get it now, a few days after I walked out the front door of the Pflag office for the final time.

There have been many great moments in my eight-plus years working at the Pflag, but a few of them really stood out to me so that’s the subject I wanted to tackle here. So, without further ado, I give you my favorite five moments from the past eight years. (And I’m going to count them down for you, Letterman style!)

5. The playoffs

When I started creating the list I put the football playoffs but that does a disservice to all the playoff games I got to cover and the trips that accompanied them. Honestly, there was nothing better to yours truly than getting to drive 100 miles, find and devour some local barbecue (and believe me, I discovered a lot of great food out there) and then watch high school sports played at its highest level. Of course, my favorite trip was always the one to the place of my birth, Bryan, but there were plenty of other great excursions as well.

4. The 2010 7-on-7 state tournament

No, this is not one of my favorite moments because it happened at Texas A&M. And it certainly is not one of my favorite because of the weather (it was ridiculously humid). It is, however, one of my favorites because of the great passing league action I got to watch and also because of the surprise of it all. Anyone who even kind of follows the Pflugerville High football team knows they don’t pass all that much, so for the Panthers to reach the quarterfinals of a passing-only tournament was a pretty big shock to me. I can still see Alex Dean’s fantastic passes and the great catches made by the likes of Jordan Moon and Storm Woods and they still make me smile.

3. Steven Sheffield throws for seven touchdowns in one half

There are great performances and then there are great performances. Sheffield’s accomplishment falls into a different category altogether. For one half of the Cougars’ bi-district playoff game, the Connally great seemed almost unstoppable. Honestly, at the time, it seemed to me that every pass the guy threw went for a touchdown. OK, well maybe he completed one pass that didn’t end in the end zone, so seven of his eight completions went for scores. And, if I remember correctly he didn’t throw an incompletion either. Now I’m not one to figure out such things as quarterback ratings, but I’d have to assume Sheffield was as perfect as a quarterback could be that day.

2. The 2009 girls basketball state semi-finals

I had high hopes for the Pflugerville girls that year. That was until I saw Houston Nimitz’s Brittney Griner. Obviously, by this point, everyone knows about Griner and the fact she is very tall and incredibly skilled, but three years ago that wasn’t really the case. Going into the game I was hopeful that the athleticism of the Panthers (who featured four eventual Division I players on their team) would overcome Griner’s height, but I was not factoring in Griner’s own athleticism or her terrific basketball skills. As you might know, Nimitz prevailed in the game and Griner went on to star at Baylor where I continue to watch her dominate opponents.

  1. 1. The 2007 state championship football game

This is another game that didn’t quite go the way I’d hoped, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t leave a lasting impression. You hear things about how big high school football is in Texas, but you have to go to a state championship game to really appreciate the scale the sport has reached. Tens of thousands of fans packed the Alamodome, the press box was pretty much close to full and the action on the field was second to none. Like I said, I wished Pflugerville would have won the game but it was not meant to be and while that end result is nothing I want to remember, the experience itself is something I will never forget.
